Love Takes Time: An Article Worth Your Time

Have you gotten the chance to slow down enough to realize how fast-paced this world has become? Today, so many people are starving for more time, more money, or greater success in life. I have said it too: “If there were only more time in a day....” But what would I do if God honored that statement?
If God slowed the earth for me and stretched out time, I know what I would do. I would probably cram the additional time I was given with more unnecessary tasks that I would claim were priorities. Our problem in fast-paced lives is often not a lack of time but a difficulty recognizing our priorities.
Every “yes” given to something that absorbs some of our time is a “no” to something else. Sadly, many of the hardest workers in the church are the ones juggling the most responsibilities and far too often saying “yes” to too much. (Wow, a preacher complaining about people saying yes too much!) Saying “yes” to a good thing is not always wrong, but without recognizing it, you might be saying “no” to time spent loving your family or the Lord. You are exchanging time that could be used to show love to those who should be receiving it.
The Lord said that the greatest commands center upon love: “‘And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these’” (Mark 12:30–31 NKJV).
The problem with love for those of us hurrying through life and struggling to find enough time in the day simply to eat is that love takes time, our time. Serious time that requires our full attention! The first quality identified of love in 1 Corinthians 13 is that “love suffers long” (1 Cor 13:4). Love is patient, and patience cannot be rushed.
Adjust your schedule for success, and choose wisely what receives priority in your time. That way, when your child approaches you with a question, you do not respond with aggravation and a sigh because you are too busy to listen. Do not neglect prayer and Bible reading because your schedule has left no time for God. Do not allow your marriage to suffer because everything else received the time that should have been given to love.
Be careful not to fill your life with so many good things that you no longer have time for the greatest things. Love takes time. Make sure the people you love, and especially the God you love, are receiving it.
